Cataloger
Performed copy and original cataloging of books, media, and electronic resources on Sirsi WorkFlows. Served as backup to the systems librarian, answered reference and technical questions, and trained new catalogers.
- Formulated procedures for cataloging ebooks.
- Ran an OCLC reclamation project and revised how holdings information is sent to OCLC for updating.
- Consulted with the systems librarian to help ensure that the ILS could handle RDA records.
- Trained a group of 8 librarians with very different levels of experience.
- Began a district-wide cataloging newsletter and a Yahoo
group to facilitate communication, support, and training among cataloging staff working in dispersed and often poorly-connected libraries.

Washington State Library – 2004-2010
Cataloger (LAP2)
Cataloged a wide range of materials. Provided Spanish
translations when needed.
- Principal cataloger for several map cataloging projects that added more than 13,000 maps to the catalog. Circulation increased immediately.
- Participated in a project that added some 25,000 Washington State documents to the catalog.
- Helped add 13,600 electronic Washington State documents to the catalog, concentrating on serials and maps.
- Taught myself to catalog CDs and cassettes for the
library's institutional branches.
- Performed original cataloging of Braille materials for the Washington Talking Books and Braille Library, creating an index of Braille codes and abbreviations for the purpose.
OCLC – 1999-2004
Metadata Specialist II
Cataloged materials from member libraries to their
specifications, including LC or Dewey call numbers, local notes, and LC and
Bilindex subject headings.
- Participated in trial runs and production cataloging of
Spanish books and videos for OCLC’s Language Sets program, which produced an annual revenue of $100,000.
- Provided one-on-one Spanish tutoring for a colleague,
including feedback on her translations of contents notes and instruction on the
nuances of grammar and usage, enabling her to improve her productivity and
speed turn-around.
- Participated in a team effort to catalog a collection
containing materials in Eastern European languages including Russian and
Lithuanian; German including items printed in Fraktur; and Welsh.
- Sought out projects that included non-monograph materials in order to make use of training opportunities. Learned to catalog videos and also gained some experience with serials, CDs, and realia.
- Participated in discussions of and acted as resource
person for a project to revise Bilindex for inclusion in OCLC products.
- Managed approximately 7 projects per month, including
liaison with the contracting library, scheduling, time management, deadlines, some physical processing of items, and delivery of records. Coordinated with others in the unit to ensure timely completion of projects under their management.
King County Archives – 1997-1999
Assistant Archivist
Helped improve access to archival materials by cataloging, organizing, and physically processing archival materials.
- Catalogued several hundred County documents, making them accessible to users.
- Created a specialized Access database to allow searching for maps from the collection by location, which improved access to a popular
resource and reduced unnecessary use of sometimes fragile materials.
